IOR's Inaugural Annual Lecture
Thursday, 14 October 2010, 18:00

Politics, Policy and Geopolitics as Operational Risk

IOR will be holding its inaugural Annual Lecture on Thursday 14 October at the prestigious University of Chicago Booth School of Business's centre in the City of London from 18.00.

The Lecture will be delivered by Dr Philippa Malmgren, a globally renowned expert in the management of risk arising from politics, policy and geopolitics and former White House advisor. Dr. Malmgren will talk about a world in which governments are re-writing the rules of the game for financial markets. It is not just financial regulation that needs to be considered but also what happens operationally to businesses and markets when governments default on social contracts and on debt. Chief Risk Officers and Operational risk managers also need to think about the macroeconomic landscape.

After twenty five years of the "great moderation of inflation" and the "peace dividend", the picture is now reversing. In a world where growth is reliable, political risk diminishes. In a world in which cash flows are scarce and growth is not reliable, it is likely we will see more political risk from messy electoral outcomes to political unrest to conflict among states as they compete for cash flows and resources. Operational risks will change now that inflation is back on the landscape.

Registration will be opened later. All you need to do right now is to put the date in your diary and, as places will be limited, look out for the next e-mail with more details and opening registrations.
